INDEPENDENT: Freedom is Yours 2020
Made with manga screen tones and colored pencils Freedom is moving forward. Looking toward the future without being weighed down by the burdens of the past. Always having something to work towards. That is my freedom. A symbolic representation of my progress in life. During spring of 2020, my time abroad as a student at Kansai Gaidai came to a halt. Through this piece, I reflected on how I was even able to reach that point. On the right is my high school self holding a Japane

ACADEMIC: "Beware"
Original artist statement: A digital art piece for my class. We had to take a bunch of copyright free images and make a picture with it, it can be wacky or have some representation to it. Spider Lilies are often associated with death and the ending of a life. I put it in a field of real flowers in a meadow with fake flowers towering over in the sky. The message is the following: no matter how genuine you are, you are in a world of hardships and insincerity. It seems that the

ACADEMIC: "Walk Together, Not Apart"
Original artist statement: My final project for my digital arts class. We were supposed to make a piece that was persuasive and about something we're passionate about. I feel like a lot of modern day feminists demonize men and victimize themselves, often putting other women down and not seeing what they have. In order to achieve success, we all must work together. The ground is meant to look like a desert and barren, as in the past women didn't have any rights and yet people

ACADEMIC: Portraits with Studio Lighting
From photography portfolio from university Original statement: In this lab, we were to try five different lighting techniques in order to enhance our understandings of our cameras. To do this, classmates went up one by one to have their photos taken. Trying to get the right angle was the most challenging, as we’re unfamiliar with making use of studio light. However, most of the photos came out excellent and enhanced our understandings of studio lighting. Arthurgwain Marquez c

INDEPENDENT: "On Pause"
Artist statement: Things have started looking up recently but I'm not gonna hold my breath yet. I drew this with all the goals I had in mind for 2020. I was planning to spend most of the year in Japan, go to Comiket, visit Mount Fuji, fill up my goshuincho, etc. All these dreams and goals I had in mind felt like they were in the palm of my hand. Most of all, I was looking forward to taking a manga class. For 2 years I struggled to reach my goal to study abroad just for that o

ACADEMIC: "Life in a Pandemic"
My digital arts project. It's a sequel to my first pandemic inspired piece, "On Pause". This one is a bit more pessimistic. Whereas the other one represented hope and having control, this one represents the unknown and losing control. There's a play button here instead of a pause button because at that time, I didn't know when I'd be able to return to Japan and resume my goals. I had begun to get restless again because of that lack of knowing and not knowing what steps to tak
